A new broom sweeps clean, but an old broom knows the corners.
"For a man to have died who might have been wise and was not -this I call a tragedy." . . . President John F. Kennedy
Plan your work, then work your plan.
If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.
I like me, for I am SPECIAL!
To represent the Lord in the world, that is our responsibility.
A Patriarch said, "I am not educated. I can only tell the people what the Lord tells me to say."
If the Savior were in this situation, what would He do?
This time we live in is to try the souls of men.
We made covenants with others in the pre-mortal life to assist them in their temple work.
The Four Types of People (or "Tators")=
1. Participators
2. Motivators
3. Spectators
4. Agitators
About the scriptures:
To know.
To love.
To teach.
Women used to darn socks, now they darn their husbands.
I'd rather be a Latter-day Saint and know I was going to hell than to be a non-member and not know where the hell I was going!
Those who know don't tell and those who tell don't know.
Abraham was promised by the Lord that all of his children will have the opportunity to hear the gospel on earth or in the spirit world.
The Prophet Joseph Smith said that the Church will fill the whole earth.
Joseph Smith holds keys to this dispensation and is still directing work beyond the veil.
We cannot associate with evil without becoming evil ourselves.
Satan is making war with the Saints; he is among us.
People are like stained glass windows. They glow and sparkle when it is sunny and bright, but when the sun goes down their true beauty is revealed only if there is light from within.
The largest room in the house is the room for improvement.
Unhappiness is not knowing what we want and killing ourselves to get it.
It isn't WHO is right that matters- but WHAT is right.
All of the water in the world cannot sink the smallest ship unless it gets within. Likewise, all of the sins in the world cannot sink you unless you let them in.
Faith is the foundation of all happiness.
Prayer is the key to the day and the lock of the night.
People don't lose their testimony; they lose their strength.
The nearer we get to heaven, the more narrow the path gets- for Satan is trying all the harder.
Help yourself, then help your neighbor.
The only way to obtain positions of honor in the Church is to work like the dickens in the one you have.
"There is a destiny that makes us all brothers. None goes his way alone. All that we send into the lives of others comes back into our own." . . . Edwin Markham
"We are all travelers in the wilderness of this world, and the best that we find in our travels is an honest friend." . . . Robert Lewis Stevenson
We all have our Goliath to conquer. Remember, David trusted in the Lord.
The temptation to steal a little, cheat a little, or go to places we shouldn't is from the Devil.
BEING DUMB: A couple at BYU Hawaii campus bought a 2nd hand car. The husband had the hood up and was working on the engine. He asked his wife who was getting into the car to turn on the ignition. The wife didn't know the ignition from the choke or anything else, and in her excitement pounded the horn long and loud. The husband came out from under the hood sputtering, and said, "Honey, you're beautiful but you are dumb." Naturally the wife was a little upset, and when the two got into the house, the wife said to her husband, "You married me because I was beautiful. But I married you because I was dumb."
Learning is lifelong.
RESOLUTIONS: Goals, May 25, 1981
Goals I have made this day:
1. Keep myself unspotted from the sins of the world. I will stay out of Babylon.
2. Better prepare the sealing ceremony that I perform in the Temple.
3. Be an example of Latter-day Saint principles.
4. Continue to commune or concourse with my Father in Heaven. May I LISTEN.
5. Deal fairly with all people.
6. Show my love for my wife and family more often.
7. Be a greater listener and less of a talker.
8. Achieve exaltation and eternal life.
9. Keep my home a house of love, peace and order.
10. Die an honest man.
11. Be the kind of person that the Lord will want to live with.
Where love and skill work together, one creates a MASTERPIECE.
Some make it happen. Some see it happen. Some ask "What happened?"
We first create our habits, and then our habits create us.
Be yourself. No one else is better qualified.
You will never FIND time for anything. If you want time, you must MAKE it!
"There are many who are not satisfied by taking the wide road that leads to destruction; they are cutting across lots." . . . Brigham Young
"God does not begin by asking us about our ability, but only our availability, and if we prove our dependability He will increase our capability." . . . Neal Maxwell
The man who does something and fails is better off than he who does nothing and succeeds in doing so. In other words: 'Tis better to try and fail than not to try and succeed.
Remember: it was not raining when Noah built the ark.
A kite rises against the wind, not with it.
Always be a "Greenie". Stay green. Don't ripen. When you are ripe, you can't grow anymore.
Promise of the Lord to a righteous people: Leviticus 26:3-12
Have you heard of the man who was so poor he couldn't even pay attention?
In the Last Days, Satan is going to work like the devil!
Discouragement is the Devil's greatest tool.
A good story never fails to kindle something that may not have burned for years: laughter for those who have forgotten how to laugh; excitement for those whose lives have dulled down to monotony; awe for those who have forgotten what wonder was; and reverence for those who have abandoned Church.
My God will be just as close to me as I'll let Him.
Longfellow wrote: "How wonderful is the human voice! It is indeed the organ for the soul; the intellect of man is enthroned visibly upon his forehead and in his eyes; and the heart of man is written upon his countenance. But the soul reveals itself in the voice only, as God revealed Himself to the prophets of old in "the still, small voice" and in a voice from the burning bush. The soul of man is audible, not visible. A sound alone betrays the flowing of the eternal fountain, invisible to man."
Rain: "That was some kind of damp!"
Be careful, you may be the only Standard Work of the Church someone reads.
Education is the ability to do the thing that ought to be done regardless of its undesirable results.
Eve missed one of the greatest feminine pleasures: she had no chance to ask Adam whether he had loved anybody as much before.
During our working hours we make a living. During our leisure hours we make a life.
When we enter the House of the Lord, we enter as guests.
Nothing is a better test of a man than to hear himself praised.
When you come to the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on.
"Man is most apt to believe what he least understands." Montague
Any time we utter anything under the influence of the Holy Ghost, it is scripture.
Conscience warns us as a friend before it punishes us as a judge.
"If you acquire enough good habits, the old vanish- just as good grass crowds out the weeds." . . . Clarence T. Hubbard
"Iron rusts from disuse. Stagnant water loses its purity and in cold weather, freezes. Even so does inaction sap the vigor of the mind." . . . Leonardo Da Vinci
I am homesick for my mountains, my heroic mother hills, and the longing that is in me no solace ever stills.
Vice is a monster of such dreadful mien that to be hated needs but to be seen. But seen too oft, familiar with her face, first we pity, then endure, and then embrace.
May you all live forever, and may the last voice you hear be Mine.
No man stands so straight but what he can stoop to help a child.
The only difference between a gang and a group is leadership.
If you remain strong on the rim, those of us here at the hub will then remain strong.
THE SOUL OF A CHILD:
1. The soul of a child is the loveliest flower that grows in the garden of God.
It climbs from weakness to knowledge and power to the sky from the clay and the clod.
2. The beauty and sweetness it grows under care; neglected it's ragged and wild.
'Tis a plant that is tender and wondrously rare, the sweet, wistful soul of a child.
3. Be tender, o gardener, and give it it's share of moisture, of warmth and of light;
And let it not lack in painstaking care to protect it from frost and blight.
4. A glad day shall come when its bloom shall unfold; It will seem that an angel has smiled,
Reflecting a beauty rare and supreme- the sweet tender soul of a child.
5. In the breast of a bulb is a promise of spring; in the little blue egg is a bird that will sing.
In the soul of the seed is the hope of the sod, in the soul of a child is the kingdom of God.

He was told to place his own burden down by the door and go try out the others, a whole room full. Soon, the young man returned and picked up his own burden. He felt better with his own burden he had carried so long. None of the others felt as good.

A CHRISTIAN:
A mind through which Christ thinks.
A heart through which Christ loves.
A voice through which Christ speaks.
A hand through which Christ helps.
We will not be given more temptation than we can resist.
They CAN because they THINK they can.
TO GIVE A GREAT TALK: Stand up! Speak up! Shut up!
Eternity is a long time; take a friend along.
GUIDELINES FOR FAITH:
1. Keep the commandments
2. Study the scriptures
3. Know the limits of man's understanding.
GOALS:
1. Must be written- to remember them; motivate; become a commitment
2. Must be realistic
3. Must make one stretch
The Church is not only to comfort the afflicted, but to afflict the comfortable.
Don't be a piece of dead wood; be living and useful.

Sung to "Oh Beautiful For Spacious Skies""
Oh, beautiful for tropic isles,
For palms and tossed cane,
For trade winds, flowers and sandy shores,
And sunshine throught the rain.
Hawaii nei, Hawaii nei,
God shed his grace on thee,
And thy beauty be preserved
From Mountains to the Sea.

MY GOALS= Oct. 31, 1982
Remember all the important days in peoples' lives.
I am too easy-going; so my wife handles the finances!
Express our love to each other often: bring a flower home once in a while.
Compliment each other on our achievements- my wife's housekeeping, etc.
Attend the Temple together often.
Trust in the Lord; morning prayers daily.
Think positively- DO IT!
Have joy in our posterity.
Have respect for each other always.
Always accept callings that come to you by those in authority; then serve willingly and well.
Never retire at night upset in any way with each other.
Have our home blest that the Spirit of the Lord can abide there.
Stay out of debt.
Be happy with what we have.
Listen to each other.
SMILE: look at the bright side of life.
The strength of the Church is the temple.
The Temple is primarily for the living; the work is not a horse race.
NOTE S FROM FIRESIDE BY ELDER ASHTON:
HAVE COURAGE:
1. CHANGE; change for the better; self-respect
2. COMMUNICATE: pray, confide, smile
3. CONTEMPLATE: ponder, meditate, think
4. CLEAN: morality; never compromise; keep high ideals
5. CONTINUE: a clean life
INTEGRITY: At first the girl started taking a few paper clips, then stamps. Next came envelopes, and a little change for lunch. Then she started taking larger amounts of money. This went along for months, into a year. Then one day the auditors came in and checked over all the books and records. They found that several thousand dollars were missing. The girl said, "But I'm not a thief!". That's the way it goes: little by little, bit by bit. That's how Satan works.
TITHING: Three men draw a line in the sand.
1. First man throws money in the air declaring that all the money that falls on the RIGHT side of the line will go to the Lord; the rest he will keep for himself.
2. Second man throws his money into the air: any that comes down "heads" will go to the Lord; "tails" remains with the man.
3. Third man throws his money in the air and says, "Lord, keep your share; I'll take whatever falls back to earth."
We should tithe our TIME as well as our money: 7 days times 24 hours equals 168 hours a week. We should give 16.8 hours a week to the Lord.
Time in mortality is our time of probation.
The less-active member of the Church is still a son of our Father in Heaven. He loves him as well as He loves the active members. We MUST do likewise.
You can measure your spirituality by how you treat your fellowmen, especially those who need help spiritually.
Any answer you need can be found in the scriptures.
Say "I love you" only when you mean it.
